KBXX (95.3 MHz) is a commercial FM radio station serving the Houston, TX metro area. Licensed to Galveston, it broadcasts an Urban Contemporary format. The station's studios and offices are located in Downtown Houston while the transmitter site is in Northeast Alvin. It is owned by Uforia Audio Network.

History[]

KBXX, then known as KLIO, was considered to be the market's first FM station to broadcast an Oldies format. This dates back to 1978, and was owned by married couple John and Whitney Sterner.

Talk 95[]

In 1984, the Sterners sold the station to Emmis Communications. Emmis would then change KLIO's format to News and Talk, with the branding "Talk 95FM". In 1991, "Talk" ended, and the station flipped to Hot AC as "Mix 95". Sister station KBQW would join KLIO in 1993, and both became "Mix 95 & 98".

Z-95.1[]

On May 1, 1996. RB Media acquired both KLIO and KBQW for a total of $57 million. Both stations split from the simulcast. When "Mix" moved to KBQW, KLIO flipped to Rhythmic Contemporary as "Z-95.1". Although the station played Rhythmic CHR music, it also included Urban hits.

It is noted that both KLIO and (former) sister Rhythmic CHR KZNS-FM in Dallas shared identical logos.

Sale to Univision; KLIO becomes "Hurbano"[]

"Z" ended in 2005, as RB Media sold to station to Univision Radio. Univision then brought an Hispanic Urban format to the frequency. KLIO officially became "La Kalle 95.1". "La Kalle" competed with Spanish Top 40 station KMIA and sister KSAM (which broadcasted Spanish Adult Contemporary format).

The Beat[]

Over the next 4 years, Univision would see KLIO's ratings drop, which resulted to a 1.0 rating in May 2009. In June of the same year, Univision pulled the plug on "Hurbano", and would then flip the station back to Rhythmic Contemporary, now as "95.1 The Beat". The first song on "The Beat" was "Yeah!" by Usher. In September 2014, the station merged to Urban Contemporary, keeping the "Beat" branding. As a result the station's logo was changed.

On Match 6, 2019, Univision Radio became Uforia Audio Network.

Movement to 95.3, "The Box" launches[]

On June 4, 2019, KLIO moved a channel up, to 95.3 MHz. With the change, "The Beat" became "The Box" and the callsign was changed to KBXX.
